Mali Empire

A vast West African empire famed for its gold and its scholarship, and for the pilgrimage of Mansa Musa, remembered as one of the wealthiest figures in history. Timbuktu grew under it into a renowned center of learning. The empire shaped the trade and culture of the whole region for centuries.
