Kanem-Bornu Empire

One of Africa's longest lasting empires, centered near Lake Chad and reaching into the northeast of what is now Nigeria. Ruled by the Sefawa dynasty, it thrived for centuries on trade across the Sahara and on Islamic scholarship. Its legacy lives on in the Kanuri people and the emirate of Borno.
